February is Black History Month, and here at Fidelity, it’s important that we recognize what this month of stands for: a celebration of achievements by African Americans and how they have paved the way for more inclusion, opportunity, and driving forward the important conversations and discussions about race.
At Fidelity, our employee resource groups help to drive conversations that include our associates from all walks of life. Aspire is both an employee and a business resource group focused on finding ways to positively impact Fidelity and our associates. Founded in 2010, Aspire champions a diverse workplace, marketplace and community, open to all employees interested in strengthening their partnership with the Black, African American, Latino, and Hispanic communities.
We sat down with Nakia Tull, Director, Distribution Communication & Events here at Fidelity Investments, to talk about her journey at Fidelity as a member of Aspire and our African American community:
FidelityJobs: What brought you to Fidelity? What was your journey in getting here?
Nakia: My best friend worked here and told me to check it out. At the time, I knew nothing about Fidelity, let alone that they would be interested in me due to my background, which was not in finance. After a few tries, I was able to land a job which was awesome! I started in 2008, so you can do the math on how long I’ve been here. I’ve have had five different careers while here. But it’s been fun, I’ve learned a ton and my diverse background and experiences have been embraced– which is great!
FidelityJobs: What made you join ASPIRE?
Nakia: I am a big advocate of diversity of all types: young, old, big, small, black, white, blue, yellow…you name it, I’m all about how differences in all of us can enhance the client experience and the work experience. What I realized is all I was doing was talking about it, which is great, but I needed to be involved with helping to drive change.
FidelityJobs: What do you love most about ASPIRE? What resources does it provide you in your day to day life and at work?
Nakia: What I love most? The people and their passion. We all share the same goals. It’s a great learning experience both personally and professionally. Personally, I learn more about the associates within my local community, their stories and experiences. Professionally, I am the communications lead on the RI committee, so I can continue building my skills here, receive exposure to senior leadership both locally and nationally, and have public speaking opportunities…they have a lot to offer and it’s also what you make of it and put into it.
FidelityJobs: What does Black History Month mean to you?
Nakia: It’s a chance to honor and celebrate the contributions black Americas have made to history and our society that often time go unnoticed.
FidelityJobs: Who are some of your mentors or people who have inspired you?
Nakia: I have a ton of mentors that keep me grounded that I can call on each and every day, to which I am totally grateful for. Although it may seem a little cliché, I’m going to shout out my mother and my grandmother. Their worth ethic is out of this world; I think this is where I get it from. They never give up and continue to push themselves with a can do attitude. My mother is working on her degree right now, which is fantastic! I have learned to always keep a smile on my face and never let them anyone see me sweat–they taught me this. I am still learning this…I have no poker face! They are part of the force I bring to work each and every day and why I strive for excellence.
FidelityJobs: What do you do for fun in your free time?
Nakia: I hang out with friends and family often, and travel. I’m pretty simple these days. If I have any free time, I am learning to crochet, working with the local high school to help make costumes for their plays. I work out, but aren’t we all?!
